ESCAP stands for Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, a regional arm of the United Nations established in 1947. ESCAP works with its 53 member states and 9 associate members to promote economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region.


Main Goals of ESCAP:

  1. Promote Economic Cooperation and Integration: ESCAP works to foster economic cooperation and integration across Asia and the Pacific by promoting regional trade agreements, infrastructure development, and facilitating economic partnerships. This includes efforts to enhance the connectivity between countries to boost regional trade and investment flows.
  2. Sustainable Development: ESCAP promotes the adoption of policies for sustainable economic and environmental development, including the implementation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The commission focuses on addressing the region’s challenges related to climate change, poverty, and inequality, while encouraging environmentally friendly policies.
  3. Social Development and Poverty Reduction: ESCAP focuses on addressing issues like social inequality, poverty, and education in the region. It supports member states in implementing strategies for poverty alleviation, improving access to health care, education, and employment, and promoting social welfare systems.
  4. Capacity Building and Technical Assistance: ESCAP provides technical assistance and capacity-building programs to enhance the capabilities of member states. This includes assistance with policy formulation, data collection, economic planning, and the development of human resources to achieve sustainable development goals.
